How Wear OS Auto Shift Detection Works for Ice Hockey Players

Your watch figures out when you're on the ice. You just play.

Why Manual Shift Tracking Doesn't Work on the Ice

Hockey is unique among sports — you rotate on and off the ice in 30–60 second bursts, multiple times per period. The moment your skates hit the ice, you're at full intensity. There's no time to fiddle with a watch.

This is why most hockey players who try generic fitness trackers give up on shift-level data within a few games. The workflow doesn't fit the sport.

The On-Ice Scout: How Time On Ice Detects Your Shifts

Time On Ice uses a proprietary motion analysis algorithm called the On-Ice Scout. It runs entirely on your Wear OS watch — no phone connection required — and monitors your movement patterns in real time.

Ice skating produces a distinctive motion signature: rhythmic lateral acceleration bursts, minimal vertical bounce compared to running, and high angular velocity through crossovers and turns. The On-Ice Scout is tuned specifically for this pattern.

When you step on the ice, the motion profile changes within seconds. The app transitions your watch face from Bench mode to On Ice mode automatically — no input from you required.

When you return to the bench and sit down, the same process works in reverse. The shift is logged, the timer stops, and your watch quietly prepares for the next shift.

What Gets Captured in Each Shift

Every automatically detected shift records the following data points:

Shift Duration

Precise start and end timestamps for each shift, logged automatically.

❤️

Heart Rate Per Shift

Average and peak BPM recorded independently for each shift — not blended across the bench.

📍

Distance Skated

Estimated distance for each shift using on-wrist accelerometer data. Works indoors, no GPS needed.

📊

Shift Quality

A composite metric combining duration and intensity, used in post-game scatter plot analysis.

How Time On Ice Compares on Auto Detection
